* * * NEW BUDDHAS ADDED 11/24/2007 * * *
Stone Buddha statues hand-carved in sizes from 1" to 12" high by artisans in Nepal & India. Many of these Indian Buddhas are sculpted from a beautiful multi-colored marble found in the himalayas. These Buddhas are carved in simple monastic robes, sometimes with a sun halo, & have a wide variety of colors & hues in the stone. Also from India are 'inrock' Buddha statues which are carved on the front side, leaving the sides & back as rough, natural rock. These cave Buddhas look very much like the old Buddha carvings that can still be seen near many Himalayan villages or in the Chinese countryside. The stone Buddhas from Nepal (NP) are sculpted from a harder grey stone found in the Kathmandu valley. Many of these Nepalese Buddhas statues are Sakyamuni Buddha, sage of the Shakya clan. These are often very detailed carvings with intricate robes, auspicious symbols, dragons, & inscribed at the base with the prayer mantra of Chenzrig. It is said that one who recites this mantra will be saved from all dangers.

Protection Buddha
= Abhaya Mudra =

Abhaya Buddha - Buddhist protection posture

The abhaya mudra is the "gesture of protection" or "fearless pose", symbolising protection, benevolence, peace, and the dispelling of fear. This is the traditional Indian gesture of appeasement made by the Buddha when He was attacked by an angry elephant, immediately calming the animal. It indicates not only appeasement of the senses, but also the absense of fear on others, which is a liberating factor. The right arm is raised, bent at the elbow, with the palm facing outwards and the fingers extending upwards. This abhaya mudra is also displayed to ward off evil.

Meditation Buddha
= Dhyana Mudra =

dhyana Buddha - Buddhist meditation posture

The dhyana mudra is the meditation posture, also called "samadhi" or "yoga" pose. This is the posture of meditation, of concentration (samadhi) on the Dharma, and of the attainment of spiritual perfection, or bodhi, "awakening". The Buddha's gaze is serene, sitting in lotus postion. The gesture is formed by placing the right hand over the palm of the left hand, with tips of both thumbs touching lightly, hands rest in the lap, palms facing up. The right hand represents enlightenment while the left hand represents samsara, the world of illusions. This mudra symbolizes the triumph of enlightenment over the world of illusions.

Sakyamuni Buddha
= Bhumisparsa =

dhyana Buddha - Buddhist earth touching posture

The bhumisparsa mudra is the gesture of witness, also known as the "touching the earth" posture. This pose is commemorative of Gautama Buddha's moment of enlightenment under the Bo tree in Bhodgaya India. It symbolizes the Buddha's unshakeable faith and resolution; armed with his resolve to remain seated under the Bodhi tree until he had solved the problem of the cessation of suffering, he took the earth as testimony of the merits that he had accumulated during his previous births. Temptation, personified by the demon Mara, came at him in many forms, but he resisted them all & touched the earth to call it to witness his victory. This was the Buddha's final obstacle on his path to enlightenment, and thus the mudra is also referred to as "the attitude of subduing Mara".

When Buddhism first came to Tibet it blended with the present religions in the area. One of these was the Bon faith, in which the dragon was a common symbol.

The Dharmacharkra mudra is the "gesture of preaching the Dharma", "fuming the wheel" or "turning the wheel of law" posture. The turning of the wheel refers to the dharma wheel, thus the spreading of the Buddha dharma, the Buddhas teachings. This posture is commemorative of one of the most important moments in the life of the Buddha. The occasion of His first sermon after his Enlightenment, preached to his former companions outside the deer park at Sarnath.
